“The Moray Arms was a tiny pub, next to the Andover Estate – I think Sid Vicious grew up nearby, it’s a tough area of London. But Shiela was the most generous publican and she was a mad keen Gooner and apparently, David O’Leary used to drink there.
“I met up with these 2 mates of mine, one’s now a professor at Cambridge, the other’s a member of the Scottish Parliament. It was all part of the experience, to meet up with mates, go and watch the game together and have a good time.
“One of the biggest things you don’t understand, and I didn’t until I moved to London, is how much football is part of the culture here.
“One of the things I also found out being an Arsenal fan is that you could go into almost any shop, you could have a chat with people and it helps you to integrate into the community… football is the essence in being in a lot of these places.”
